Monthly and Holiday Food Distribution to Needy Families with Children:
Salei Mauzone (Food Baskets) are delivered nationwide, from a central warehouse. An army of volunteers is engaged in the process of packing and delivery.
Recipients are identified, screened and approved by local municipalities which work very closely with Colel Chabad to assure that no family goes hungry.
The monthly food baskets contain all non-perishable household food items, potatoes and root vegetables, as well as cleansers and other consumables needed for the entire month.
Colel Chabad's wholesale cost per shipment is NIS 250, with a retail value of NIS 375.
Before major festivals such as Rosh Hashanah and Passover, the program is expanded to include nearly 25,000 additional families that hover just above the poverty line. These families barely make do under normal circumstances, and are in no position to cover the necessities for holidays.
Holiday food baskets include all of the above, plus meat, poultry and fish at a wholesale cost of NIS 400 per delivery, with a retail value of NIS 600.
Food basket content is constantly being fine tuned subject to detailed follow-up with each recipient family. This enables Colel Chabad to determine how best to meet their nutritional and household maintenance needs.
During the 2006 war in Lebanon, Colel Chabad's distribution branch in Safed was the primary civilian food delivery organization in Northern Israel, working hand in hand with the Israel Defense Forces to make sure no one went hungry despite the constant barrage of rockets.
